WORK-RELATED ILLNESS - VIBRATION SYNDROME
Hand-arm vibration syndrome (or “HAVS”) was previously known as “vibration white finger”. It is a generic term for a range of conditions (including carpal tunnel syndrome) that can result from the transmission into the arms and shoulders of vibrations from:-
- hand-held power tools
- holding an item being worked upon against powered equipment
HAVS can cause numbness, pain and weakness in the hands and fingers.
Whole body vibration (or “WBV”) is a condition experienced by people like tractor drivers, lorry drivers and the drivers of excavators and similar equipment, whose working environment is characterised by vibrations that pass through the entire body. Amongst other problems, this can lead to significant lower back pain.
The general provisions about all work-related illnesses apply to workers who have hand arm vibration syndrome or who suffer from the effects of whole body vibration. Workers have both general and statutory duties owed to them by their employer and, if there is a breach of those duties which results in a worker developing a work related illness, that worker may be entitled to compensation from the employer.
