ROAD ACCIDENT - UNTRACED DRIVER
Just as there is a scheme in place to protect the public from uninsured drivers, there is also a scheme in place to compensate those who suffer harm (whether bodily injury or damage to their property) at the hands of an untraced driver. This scheme is also operated by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau.
Again, there are strict rules that need to be followed before an MIB claim will succeed and some people are not eligible to receive payment under the scheme (for example, a car passenger who knows that the car being travelled in is stolen or being used to carry out a crime). Similarly, there is a limit on the amount that the MIB will pay out and excesses do apply in some circumstances.
